There’s something magical about Madison in the summer. The lakes sparkle, patios fill up, and there’s a buzz in the air that only warm weather and a welcoming community can bring. But one of the best parts of summer here? The incredible mix of small businesses that make this city so unique—and totally worth exploring.

We might be a little biased, but our corner of Madison on Cottage Grove Road is bursting with personality thanks to a few very special neighbors.

🐠 Red Fish Blue Fish Aquatics

If you haven’t stepped inside Red Fish Blue Fish yet, you’re in for a treat. This locally owned aquarium shop is full of colorful fish, dreamy tanks, and passionate folks who love helping people dive into the world of aquatics. Seriously, ask Todd about fish and watch his face light up as he bestows his knowledge on you! Whether you’re just starting your first tank or you’re a full-blown fish fanatic, this shop is a gem and a must visit!

🎨 The Curious Crafter

Right next door, The Curious Crafter is your go-to for getting those creative juices flowing. They’ve got craft kits, drop-in “Crafternoons,” and tons of supplies to make your Pinterest dreams come true. It’s the kind of place where you walk in for a gift and leave with a project (or three) for yourself. Plus, they’re famous! Featured by HGTV and Country Living—so yeah, they're kind of a big deal, be sure to ask for an autograph!

🏳️‍🌈 A City That Celebrates Everyone

One of the things that makes Madison stand out is how it celebrates diversity, especially when it comes to its small businesses. LGBTQ-owned shops, restaurants, and services are woven throughout the city, and their presence helps make Madison the inclusive, vibrant place it is. If you're looking to support businesses that reflect the full spectrum of our community, check out this Visit Madison guide to LGBTQ-owned businesses.

🛍️ Make a Day of It

Madison is the kind of city where you can spend the morning wandering the farmers’ market on the Capitol Square, swing by our neighborhood to visit us or Red Fish Blue Fish and The Curious Crafter in the afternoon, and still have time to hit a food cart rally or open-air concert by sunset.

The Bodega at Breese Stevens, art fairs, neighborhood festivals, vintage shops, quirky bookstores—there’s always something new to discover, and always someone friendly ready to greet you when you walk through the door.

🌞 Summer’s Not Forever—But These Memories Will Be

Whether you’re a longtime local or just visiting for the weekend, summer is the perfect time to explore the places that make Madison one-of-a-kind. Our little strip mall might not be flashy, but it's full of heart—and we’re proud to be part of a city that supports creativity, community, and connection.

So grab a friend, take a stroll, and come say hi. We promise you’ll leave with something special.
